Picked it myself

We have been overwhelmed visually by Faith's most recent picks of outfits. They are always dazzling, and super fancy. I love that she uses color so visually! And mixing prints.....a natural! The best is that she is just so naturally confident in anything that I love just letting her strut. And yes, this has been a repeat outfit, she did remember how meticulously she put it together.

Renaissance Fair

Mother Goose's house: Yes, they were very very well trained geese (with diapers) that will give you hugs and kisses. Very different from the geese I remember on Grandpa's farm.

There was live jousting (the main reason we went). Although the action took place in front of us, Danny was sure we were seated in a portion of the stadium that faced the royal stables so he could see the horses at all times. He was severely disappointed that he didn't get to ride any of the horse, yet, in true boy fashion, recounted all the battle with actions.
Story time with the queen. The costuming was fantastic throughout the festival. I had anticipated that the paid actors would be in costume, I had not, however, realized that there is a costume rental shop before the entrance of the festival so just about anyone could be 'in character' at the festival. Talk about a group of loonies! It was fun. We shall see next year if we can pick the magic day when there are less people crowding the fair so we can actually see what is going on without bumping into some sort of pirate of unknown origins.

Leprechauns made it

Despite some major distractions during March, the tricky leprechauns made it through our house leaving string traps and golden treasures. I even did my best at making shamrock pancakes and syrup - of course since the crafty leprechauns had turned the milk green the pancakes were green that day too. The kids still talk of the sneaky leprechauns, so it is worth the little extra effort for one day in March.

Adventures in Foster Care

It certainly has been awhile since I wrote another chapter in this book, not that there hasn't been plenty of adventure! Yet, we had a rough week, so why not complain about it again? NO!

The flip side of a really rough week is that I really get a chance to change, without change rough gets rocky and rocky gets worse.....So change I must. With change comes recognizing where I am as a mother and a person. Interesting that foster has put me as a person more into perspective than mothering my bio babies ever has. With them, my darling Faith and golden Danny, I have always been Mama. Although I may have been a crappy mama sometimes, I have always been privelaged to be their mama.

With Viv I am a lot of mama in there, but I battle more with me than anything else. Me in wanting to not have to deal with it, wanting to give up, wanting to let the rage loose, wanting to be snarky, and worst of all, wanting not to love her. How awful! Who would purposefully want to NOT love a child?! See the battle I face. With mothering I can just pull out a new set of tools to cope with behavior, or try a new tactic, or just plain ignore them when things go past my realm.

In looking at me, I realize I am a pretty awesome mom, no false modesty there I spend a lot of time working on it. That's good. As a person, I am not as close to Christ as I know I can be. I seek for His love more than anything else. And that is why Josh and I have not thrown in the towel, because we know God loves this little thing and He trusts us enough to help her out. Six months is a lot of helping. Often times I feel less helpful and more.....well.....selfish. I want to worry about my comfort level and what I like and the whole other slew of nasty, nice, mean and selfish things that come with thinking soley around oneself. The thought occured to me recently that Christ might have had some moments that he didn't really like the mean people around him, yet He had the power of person (helps to be half God) to really continue to love them. Whereas I claim to be a child of God, that makes me part if not half God, then I can grow in that awesome power.

On a less inspiring note; the line from Shrek (the few moments I watched of the show) comes frequently to mind "ogres are like onions." I am sure their was some rude follow up by donkey, yet the analogy stands. Although I am not making the direct link to ogres and foster children, the similarities are striking....in that the layers are there and peeled away as time progresses. And frankly, it stinks. There are layers that these darling little people have been tucking away, and I suppose (I shall look at the bright side and say)( that they come to trust you more, relax a bit more, and then rip of the next ring to reveal what is underneath. The psychology of it all mind boggling and I can't even attempt to go there.....mostly it is sad. Because of some bad decisions around these little people they are damaged. Talk about baggage! That doesn't give any reason to love them less, reason to love her more and added difficulty in doing so.

Conclusion: loving some people is harder than I thought it would be because it requires me to change.

Spring to Summer in a matter of days

On Sunday we were doing this:

I wish I had had the camera on video and not just still cuz just seconds later, as I was saying "Faith, watch out for the sli.....!" She totally went heels over head over the little red slide.

And then by Wednesday we were doing this:

The kids have been more than anxious to put on their swimming suits, but now with the weather well over 80 it was time to really enjoy the grass in the backyard.

Something Witchy this way comes....

One of my favorite shows of all time is coming to town, and with me in it! Oh I am super excited to admit that I got the part of the WITCH in Copperstar Rep's company production. Yes, I am again a witch. The kids now equate me and theatre with the title witch. I love it. They love my songs too which makes it easy to practice them. Show opens Friday April 8th. Get tickets and come (cuz I don't get any comps for this one)! I promise to be the best WITCH I have yet been.

Back home

Since we were downtown when Josh picked us up, and we had some coupons for the Science Center, we shook out our jet legs and played a bit. We went mainly to see the Body Works exhibition. That was crazy. The jury is still out whether I liked it or not. Seeing all the intricacies of the body that way was facinating. Seeing real dead people posed without their skin on in a plastified display was somewhat unnerving. I am glad I will never do disections on a cadaver, Body Works was close enough for me. Again, the place was crowded, not the way I like to enjoy my museums. The kids, of course, had more fun with the giant blocks then seeing the nerves of human brain. I get it, with all those neuron pathways in their brain just itching to be used it was better we put their growing muscles to work.
All the vacation fun sure did tucker out Danny and get the kids in a wacky sleeping schedule. None of us quite know when bed time is supposed to be anymore. Maybe now...

We've been needing a vacation

I was thinking recently how seldomly we had gone on vacation since moving to Arizona. Perhaps, a bit strangely, the best place we can think of to spend the little time and money we have to go on vacation has been back to Idaho (which tells me I might see more of the world if I just lived in Idaho and vacationed else where).

This winter wonderland escape was brought to us by the Ricks family who hired us to take care of their home and family for a couple of weeks. It may not seem like much of a vacation to go and spend all your time taking care of someone else's five kids, but it was bliss! The kids where in heaven, as was I. Josh and Viv got to spend one week with us then flew back to Arizona to hold down the aztec fort before my return (and it seemed as though they had been ambushed by the mess I encountered upon arrival).

The kids were excited to ride on the plane. Faith had remembered the last time we flew, and Danny was excited to be aware of this plane ride while Viv was just soaking it in for the first time in bewliderment.
Sparing the chance of getting some recirculated flu bug and then taking it to Boise for our babysitting adventure, Josh made us take extra precaution on the flight up. Sure, we got some funny looks (one guy mentioned indescreetly to the person behind home that there must be some sort of conspiracy on board) but it was worth the comfort of knowing that we weren't accidentally going to catch anything dreadful to go through 8 kids.

Once flying into Boise we had a night of rest there before taking a quick drive over to Rexburg to see some more snow and cousins. Before we even had the car in park at home in the Burg Faith was begging to get out and play in the snow. We let them play until soaked through, then dried the clothes on the radiator, then went out again. Hit repeat the next day with adding in some sledding down Smith park hill before driving right back to Boise. It may have been a flash in the pan trip but it was ultimately worth it to have the whole family get to meet Viv and say goodbye to some family moving back East again. And the snow....perhaps the Rexburgers were sick of it but we were thrilled!!!

Once back in boise we had super fun with cousins, all their toys, dress-ups, and art work.

double bonus was having Grampa Dan and Grama-Shell come and visit from the Northwest. It sure was a lot short of a drive to come to Boise than all the way down to Arizona and any time together is fantastic time. Of course I was bit distracted taking on 5 more kids, but we had fun nonetheless.

We went to the Birds of Prey (Danny here sporting the wingspan of a California Condor) on a free to the public day - madness! I had been there with the kids when we lived there and loved seeing the birds undisturbed, but 8 kids, 4 adults and a mass of other people was not ideal, albiet cheap.

Once Josh left, Danny became my sleeping buddy in the king sized bed, which was convinient considering he had a tendency to rotate while sleeping and I was still out of range. Danny still likes to be cuddled while falling asleep, but thereafter is a jumble gym. My amazing nephew, age 9, read the girls to sleep each night. Faith and Eve are the best of friends and giggled as all girls should as going to bed together. It was a blissful extended sleepover for them, granted they got grumpy by the end of a couple longer days, but they still loved each night and refused to sleep seperate.

In summary, taking care of more kids is not so much more difficult as long as you have plenty of playdough to go around.
